“I’m a spy, Anderson has said about what she does. I just observe and ask the question, why do we do what we do? Homeland applies this question to the last decade: from the security-obsessed years following 9/11, through two ongoing wars, and into the economic meltdown of the last two years. Anderson is especially good at seeing the absurdity in American culture and, setting it to music.”

Thanks to the wonderfulness of the Breaking Bad finale— possibly the best show since The Wire and Deadwood— I’m loving this song: Danger Mouse & Daniele Luppi – “Black” ft. Norah Jones. Take a listen. Then go watch that show: brilliant writing, shooting, and acting. So, so good.

"Susan Philipsz
It’s just someone singing in an empty room. It’s not art. It’s music. They don’t give the Mercury Music Prize to a painter. They shouldn’t give the Turner Prize to a singer. It’s pretentious. People have iPods for music. They come to the Tate to see art. She’s meant to be original singing in a supermarket, but Tiffany did it twenty years ago. Philipsz is praised for singing under bridges and in other unusual places. However, this is often done by people nationwide at pub closing time. Her observation that a river is darker under a bridge resembles a soundbite from George Bush on YouTube.
The Tate said, “Philipsz uses her own voice to create uniquely evocative sound installations that play upon and extend the poetics of specific, often out-of-the-way spaces."3:AM Magazine » Abandon Art All Ye Who Enter Here

“The day the devil comes to getcha you
know him by the way he smiles
the day the devil comes to getcha
he’s a rusty truck with only twenty miles
he’s got bad brakes he’s got loose teeth
he’s a long way from home
the day the devil comes to getcha
he’s got a smile like a scar
he knows the way to your house
he’s got the keys to your car
and when he sells you his sportcoat you say: funny!”TitleThe Day The DevilArtistLaurie AndersonAlbumStrange Angels
