"The University of California, Berkeley on Wednesday announced the selection of the New York firm Diller Scofidio + Renfro to design a new Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, the university’s second attempt at the project, according to Robin Pogrebin in the New York Times. Last year, it abandoned plans for a $200 million, 140,000-square-foot museum designed by the Japanese architect Toyo Ito because it would have been too expensive; the budget for the new version is $95 million. The architects, who were selected from a field of ten firms, will develop plans to integrate a forty-eight-thousand-square-foot, art-deco printing plant with a new fifty-thousand-square-foot structure to be built along Oxford Street between Center and Addison streets in downtown Berkeley. The new museum, to be completed by late 2014, will replace the BAM/PFA’s smaller current building, which does not meet seismic standards, and will house its collection of more than sixteen thousand works of art and fourteen thousand films and videos."
